Founded by Brothers, Built on Trust
In 1977, brothers Bob and Charlie Conroy established Conroy Moving and Storage as the only full-service moving and storage facility in Northwest Colorado - a role the company has held continuously ever since.
For 34 years, the Conroys built the business into the trusted name for moving in the Yampa Valley. They operated first as a United Van Lines agent and later as a Wheaton Worldwide agent, giving a small Steamboat Springs operation the reach of a national van line network.
A New Chapter
Third-Generation Yampa Valley Roots
In January 2019, Conroy Moving and Storage was purchased by Ryan Shorter, a two-time Olympic Alpine Ski Coach (PyeongChang 2018, Beijing 2022) who moved his family back to Steamboat Springs. Ryan brought the same attention to detail, preparation, and excellence that guided Olympic athletes to the podium.
Ryan's roots in the Yampa Valley run deep. His great-grandparents moved to Steamboat Springs in 1910. His grandfather Carl Shorter was born here in 1913. His great-grandfather Irving Shorter logged what is now the Sarvis Creek Wilderness Area, building the flumes whose remnants still mark hiking trails today. Ryan is the third generation of Shorters to call this valley home.
Under Ryan's ownership, Conroy made a decisive break from the van-line model. Since 2019, we've operated as a fiercely independent mover - running our own trucks and crews from origin to destination. No handoffs, no middlemen, just direct accountability for every move.
Ryan also expanded the company's niche beyond household moves. Because Steamboat Springs is a difficult place to ship furniture - often requiring loading docks and forklifts that homes don't have - Conroy's warehouse became central to the local design and construction trades. Today, the company is also the preferred mover for three school districts and a university in the region.
