Craig is the county seat of Moffat County and the commercial center for a vast swath of Northwest Colorado. With a population around 9,000, it's the largest town between Steamboat Springs and the Utah border. Unlike Hayden — which has become a Steamboat commuter town — Craig has its own economic base: ranching, energy production, county government, and regional services.
The Tri-State Generation coal plant and the region's mining heritage have shaped Craig's workforce for decades. As the energy economy evolves, the town is diversifying — but it remains a place where people work locally, not commute to Steamboat. That gives Craig a different character: more working-class, more rooted, more self-contained.
The surrounding ranch country stretches west toward Maybell and the Dinosaur National Monument area, north into Wyoming, and south toward Meeker.
